First of all, a few comments about the published copy of this book by Filquarian Publishing: It is indeed a "High Quality Paperback," just as it says on the cover. The book is of good size at 8 ½" x 11", with superior binding for a paperback. However, the typeface may put you aback when you first open for a read. It is printed in I believe the Century typeface which appears to be made on a high quality laser printer - not common for a printed work. This does save on printing costs, and makes this volume very affordable. That's a good thing.

Another very good thing is this book has excellent content between the covers. While it may take today's reader a bit of a while to get used to the English used in 1871, it doesn't take long because these sermons will get ahold of you from the very beginning. Here's a sample: "Our most darling theories, by which we have sought to solace our souls in reference to our future destiny, if false, will be all ruthlessly torn away, and we must see what verily and eternally is. All mankind will come upon one doctrinal platform when they enter eternity. They all have one creed there. There is not a skeptic even in hell. The devils believe and tremble. The demonstration that God is holy is so irrefragable, so complete and absolute, that doubt or denial is impossible in any spirit that has passed the line between time and eternity."

These sermons to the natural man were preached to move people to truly know themselves as closely as they can to how God certainly knows us. This dark and muddled glass we know peer through will one day be made clear, and in the holiness of God Almighty, we will know just as much as we are known. Even with the assurance of salvation through Jesus Christ, this can be a very frightening thought. No wonder when the people of old saw a being from heaven - whether angelic or theophonic - those people fell on their faces in fear, and were almost always told, "don't be afraid."

This knowing and the fear it induces is what brings us to our knees, and makes it very easy to agree with those thoughts in the Sermon on the Mount; "I AM bankrupt spiritually!" "I DO mourn the sin I have committed against God and only God!" "I DO listen meekly to the Spirit's call to receive this great Gift of salvation through Jesus!" "I WILL confess that Jesus is Lord and WILL believe in my heart that God raised Him from the dead!"

So prepare yourself to wade through a few 1870's idioms, and let the Spirit move again through these sermons preached all those years ago!
